4.1 Area and Distance Calculations
Using the cloud free Google Earth image as reference, we were able to digitize 36 of the fragments previously identified. We used ArcGIS to calculate the area and the distance from each fragments to Bilsa Biological Reserve. These attributes are important to conservationists of the Karubian Lab because it will help them determine fragments that are of greater importance and that can be joined to form contiguous forest cover.
4.2 Secondary and Old Growth Forest
We confirmed that fragments with higher biodiversity values were closer to the reserves. Cloud cover and vegetation with very low values were removed for the purpose of this study. Secondary forest values and Old Growth forest values were distinguished by using the values of previously identified fragments. We then exported the output ranges into ArcGIS.
